How to view blocked videos in Canada

On January 3, 2009, in Technology, Websites, by brock

I used to watch videos on NBC.com all the time until a couple of months ago when they blocked users from Canada from viewing their videos.  There are a lot of other sites that you can’t view if you’re from Canada (or other countries besides the USA, I would imagine).  I recently found a cool VPN utility that will let you view these videos.  It’s free, and seems to work pretty well!  It’s called Hotspot Shield, and it can be downloaded here.

What a day!

On December 2, 2008, in Finance, Politics, by brock

TSX has it’s biggest one day point loss ever, the Liberal-NDP-Bloc coalition appears set to take power next week, and one one-and-a-half hour call to Shaw to cancel our account (3 CSRs spoken to, none of them could do it!).

What a terrible, terrible day.

Accounting question

On October 17, 2008, in Finance, by brock

Here’s an accounting/tax question for all you smart finance people out there.  For vehicle expenses for employment, in relation to Canadian income tax returns, is there a per-kilometre-rate that can be used instead of keeping track of all of your vehicle expenses throughout the year (ie gas, oil changes, etc)?  If anyone knows the answer to this, and how to do it properly on my tax return for next year, I’ll buy you a beer or two…..
